Malaysia must prepare for three Middle East conflict scenarios, analysts warn

Penaga Research and Consultancy has identified three conflict scenarios in the Middle East that could significantly impact Malaysia's economy and security, calling for proactive government preparation.

The consultancy argues that while Malaysia has benefitted substantially from its geographic distance from regional tensions and favorable timing in the global semiconductor cycle, these advantages cannot be relied upon indefinitely. The firm emphasises that Putrajaya must move beyond passive observation and develop comprehensive contingency strategies.

The analysis underscores Malaysia's economic exposure to Middle East instability, particularly through critical supply chains and trade routes. Disruptions to regional commerce could have cascading effects on Malaysia's manufacturing sector and export-dependent economy, which has experienced recent growth partly due to semiconductor demand.

The research suggests that preemptive policy planning—rather than reactive responses—would better position Malaysia to weather potential geopolitical shocks. This includes measures to strengthen economic resilience, diversify trading partnerships, and establish clear protocols for different escalation scenarios.

Government officials have not yet publicly responded to the consultancy's recommendations, though the analysis reflects growing concern among policymakers about the sustainability of Malaysia's current economic trajectory amid global uncertainties.
