PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia should continue developing expertise in cutting-edge technologies to remain competitive globally, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Wednesday, emphasising the need to balance technological progress with cultural preservation.
Anwar stressed that the country must not abandon its foundational values and cultural identity in pursuit of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. The dual focus reflects growing recognition among policymakers that rapid technological adoption requires careful consideration of social and cultural implications.
The remarks come as Malaysia seeks to position itself as a regional technology hub amid intensifying competition from neighbouring countries also investing heavily in AI and quantum research capabilities. Government and private sector initiatives have been launched to build domestic expertise in these fields.
Anwar's position suggests the administration views technological advancement and cultural continuity as complementary objectives rather than competing priorities. The statement reflects broader regional discussions about how developing nations can harness emerging technologies to drive economic growth without compromising social cohesion or traditional values.
