MELAKA, Oct 20 — Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has stressed the importance of maintaining strong proficiency in the Malay language while ensuring that English language skills remain a priority in Malaysia's education system.
Speaking in Melaka, Fadhlina highlighted that the Malay language serves as a crucial pillar of national identity and unity, requiring consistent reinforcement across educational institutions. However, she cautioned against allowing this emphasis to result in declining English proficiency among students.
"Both languages play vital roles in our education system," the minister said, noting that English remains essential for global communication, business, and academic advancement. She stressed that students must develop competency in both languages to prepare them for an increasingly interconnected world.
Fadhlina's remarks reflect ongoing discussions in Malaysia's education sector about balancing linguistic priorities. Education officials have acknowledged the need for comprehensive language policies that strengthen the national language while equipping students with international communication skills.
The minister's statement comes as Malaysian schools continue to navigate language curriculum implementation, with educators and policymakers emphasizing that proficiency in both Malay and English need not be mutually exclusive objectives.
