KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stressed the urgent need for Malaysia to invest in cutting-edge technology to combat drug smuggling operations that have become increasingly sophisticated.
Anwar highlighted that criminal syndicates engaged in drug trafficking have continually refined their methods and tactics, outpacing current detection and enforcement capabilities. He noted that law enforcement agencies face mounting challenges in identifying and intercepting illicit narcotics as smugglers employ more advanced concealment and distribution techniques.
The Prime Minister's remarks underscore growing concerns within Malaysian authorities about the evolving threat posed by international drug networks. Officials have previously reported instances of smugglers utilising innovative methods to transport narcotics across borders, often through organised channels that circumvent traditional security measures.
Anwar's call for technological advancement comes as Malaysia continues to grapple with drug-related crime and its associated social costs. The government has identified narcotics trafficking as a priority security issue, with various enforcement agencies collaborating to disrupt supply chains and apprehend traffickers.
Experts have suggested that enhanced surveillance systems, advanced scanning technologies at ports of entry, and improved intelligence-sharing mechanisms could strengthen Malaysia's defensive capabilities against sophisticated smuggling operations.
