Malaysia nets 99 suspects, seizes RM119m in illegal mining raids

Malaysian law enforcement agencies concluded a major operation against illegal mining activities from August 19 to 23, resulting in the arrest of 99 suspects across multiple locations. The sweeping enforcement action targeted unlawful extraction and trafficking of natural resources, yielding significant seizures of contraband materials.

Operatives recovered approximately 33,000 tonnes of illegally mined materials during the operation, including coal, quarry stone, earth and sand with an estimated street value of RM21 million. The confiscated resources have been secured by authorities for further investigation and potential forfeiture proceedings.

Beyond the raw materials, law enforcement also seized assets valued at RM119 million linked to the illegal mining enterprise. These assets likely include equipment, vehicles, and financial holdings associated with the criminal network, according to enforcement agencies.

The operation represents a significant disruption to illegal mining networks that have long plagued the region. Malaysian authorities have intensified efforts to combat unlicensed resource extraction, which depletes natural reserves and undermines legitimate mining operations while generating revenue for criminal syndicates.
