Malaysia pledges unified ASEAN push against transboundary haze

Malaysia's Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Arthur Joseph Kurup outlined an ambitious agenda for tackling transboundary haze during the 28th Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee Meeting on October 6, 2027, which Malaysia hosted.

Kurup said Malaysia would use its chairmanship to operationalize the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution (AATHP) through concrete measures aimed at addressing the recurring environmental crisis affecting the region. The initiative prioritizes strengthened data-sharing mechanisms among member states to improve early warning systems and environmental monitoring.

Improved law enforcement and cross-border cooperation form the cornerstone of Malaysia's proposed approach. Officials emphasized that effective implementation of existing regional agreements requires bolstered coordination between nations and more rigorous monitoring of activities that contribute to haze formation.

The push reflects growing urgency among Southeast Asian countries to address haze episodes that regularly blanket the region, causing significant public health concerns and economic disruption. Previous transboundary haze events have been linked to wildfire activity, particularly in Indonesia, affecting respiratory health across multiple nations.

Malaysia's chairmanship initiative seeks to transform diplomatic commitments into actionable regional policy, positioning ASEAN member states for more effective prevention and response strategies in the coming years.
