SEREMBAN, Oct 16 — Malaysia will pursue dialogue and regional mechanisms rather than enforcement measures to address recurring transboundary haze affecting the country, Deputy Prime Minister Mohamad Hasan said on Wednesday.

Hasan indicated that while Malaysia remains concerned about air quality impacts from regional sources, the government recognises the importance of maintaining cordial ties with neighbouring Indonesia through established diplomatic channels and Asean frameworks.

"Taking unilateral enforcement action could risk straining our relationship with Indonesia," Hasan said, emphasising Malaysia's commitment to collaborative problem-solving. "We believe sustained dialogue and cooperation through regional platforms offer a more effective path forward."

The comments reflect Malaysia's longstanding approach to managing the annual haze phenomenon, which typically peaks during dry seasons when land-clearing practices in Indonesia intensify. Officials have previously credited diplomatic engagement for achieving some progress in coordinating cross-border environmental initiatives.

Hasan's remarks come as Malaysia continues monitoring air quality levels and working with Asean partners to enhance information-sharing and environmental protocols designed to mitigate transboundary pollution.
