Malaysia pursues diplomatic engagement to resolve Rohingya crisis

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's preference for diplomatic channels in tackling the Rohingya refugee crisis affecting Myanmar and the wider region. Speaking in Putrajaya on October 28, Anwar emphasised that sustained dialogue represents the most promising avenue for finding a durable solution to displacement affecting hundreds of thousands of people.

The statement reflects Malaysia's longstanding position as a key regional player in addressing the humanitarian dimensions of the Myanmar situation. As a frontline state hosting significant numbers of Rohingya refugees, Malaysia has consistently advocated for multilateral cooperation and negotiated settlements rather than unilateral actions.

Anwar's remarks come amid ongoing international efforts to encourage Myanmar's cooperation on refugee repatriation and the restoration of rights for the stateless minority. The diplomatic strategy underscores the Malaysian government's belief that engagement with Naypyidaw, rather than isolation, offers the best prospects for progress on the issue.

The Rohingya crisis remains one of Southeast Asia's most pressing humanitarian challenges, with hundreds of thousands living in refugee camps across the region, primarily in Bangladesh and Malaysia. Attempts to facilitate voluntary, safe, and dignified returns have faced significant obstacles, making sustained diplomatic initiatives crucial to any breakthrough.
