Malaysia pushes inter-agency data sharing to identify at-risk students

KULIM — Malaysia's Ministry of Home Affairs is advocating for a coordinated data-sharing framework between education, law enforcement and health agencies to identify and support at-risk students, according to statements made by Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution.

The proposed system would enable the three sectors to exchange information on students facing vulnerability, whether due to behavioural concerns, health issues or other risk factors. Officials argue that pooled data and cross-agency communication could facilitate timely interventions before young people encounter serious difficulties.

The initiative reflects growing recognition among Malaysian policymakers that student welfare requires a holistic approach beyond the traditional scope of any single government ministry. By combining insights from educators, health professionals and police, authorities believe they can better target support programs and preventive measures.

The proposal aligns with broader government efforts to address youth-related social challenges and reduce the incidence of delinquency and substance abuse among school-age populations. Implementation would require development of data protection protocols to safeguard student privacy while enabling appropriate information exchange among authorized officials.
