Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi has urged UiTM to spearhead Malaysia's entry into the quantum technology sector by establishing a specialised department, signalling the government's commitment to keeping the nation abreast of global technological developments.
The initiative is intended to be operational by next year, with Zahid emphasising the importance of building local expertise in quantum computing and related fields. The move reflects broader concerns among Malaysian policymakers that the country risks falling behind regional competitors in adopting transformative technologies.
Quantum technology represents one of the most significant technological frontiers, with applications spanning cryptography, computing, and scientific research. By establishing a dedicated academic centre at UiTM, Malaysia aims to develop research capacity and train specialists capable of driving innovation in the field.
The proposal aligns with Malaysia's broader push to transition towards a knowledge-based economy and strengthen its position in the global technology sector. Establishing such a department would provide the institutional framework necessary to attract research funding, collaborate with international partners, and nurture a domestic quantum technology ecosystem.
