KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has raised its duty-free shopping limit to RM10,000 for international visitors arriving at Langkawi and Labuan, marking a significant expansion of tax-exempt retail opportunities at both destinations.

The increased allowance is intended to enhance the shopping experience and competitiveness of the two duty-free zones, which have long been popular retail destinations for both domestic and international travellers. The move reflects government efforts to boost tourism and consumer spending in these designated free-trade areas.

Under the new arrangement, visitors will be able to purchase a broader selection of goods without incurring duty charges, subject to customs regulations. The duty-free categories typically encompass cosmetics, fashion items, jewellery, electronics, alcohol, and tobacco products, though specific restrictions and conditions apply to certain categories.

The government's decision to increase the shopping threshold is expected to attract more travellers to Langkawi and Labuan, particularly from neighbouring countries in the Southeast Asian region. Tourism authorities anticipate the enhanced incentive will contribute to higher visitor arrivals and increased spending at retail outlets in both zones.

Visitors are advised to familiarize themselves with the specific terms and conditions governing duty-free purchases, including item-specific limitations and documentation requirements, before making purchases at designated duty-free retailers.
