PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia's Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it stands prepared to dispatch its elite Special Tactical Operation unit to Nepal to aid in the search for nine hikers who have lost contact with authorities, according to a statement issued Wednesday.
The missing trekkers have become a concern for both Malaysian officials and Nepalese rescue services as search operations continue in the Himalayan nation's mountainous regions. The JBPM indicated it has the necessary expertise and equipment to support international rescue efforts in such terrain.
Specialist rescue teams such as JBPM's tactical unit are typically trained in high-altitude mountaineering, rope rescue techniques, and wilderness survival protocols essential for operations in complex mountain environments. The department's readiness to deploy reflects Malaysia's capacity to contribute to regional humanitarian assistance.
The decision to send Malaysian personnel would require coordination with Nepalese authorities and relevant diplomatic channels. International rescue operations in the region have historically involved teams from multiple countries pooling resources and expertise to address emergency situations in remote areas.
