Malaysia records nearly two billion e-invoices from 268,000 taxpayers

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia's e-invoice system has processed nearly two billion submissions from more than 268,000 registered taxpayers as of October 1, according to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB). The figures demonstrate substantial adoption of the digital invoicing framework since its implementation, reflecting a shift toward automated tax compliance among Malaysian businesses of varying sizes.

The e-invoicing initiative forms part of the IRB's broader modernisation efforts to streamline tax administration and reduce compliance costs for the business community. The system requires eligible taxpayers to submit invoice data electronically, enhancing transparency and enabling real-time tax monitoring.

The milestone comes as Malaysia continues to expand its digital tax infrastructure. The IRB has emphasised the importance of the e-invoice system in combating tax evasion and improving revenue collection efficiency. Officials have indicated that compliance rates remain a priority as the system matures and reaches wider market penetration.

Business groups and accounting professionals have noted that while initial adoption challenges existed, familiarity with the platform has improved significantly. The IRB has provided technical support and guidance to assist taxpayers in meeting their filing obligations under the new framework.
