Unclaimed money in Malaysia totalled RM14 billion as of the end of September, according to the Ministry of Finance, highlighting a persistent challenge in reuniting substantial financial assets with their rightful owners.
Deputy Minister of Finance identified several obstacles contributing to the accumulation. Chief among these is insufficient public awareness regarding unclaimed funds and the mechanisms available to claim them, leaving many Malaysians unaware they may be entitled to recover money held in various institutions.
The ministry also noted that locating and confirming the identities of money owners presents significant practical difficulties. These challenges have compounded over time, resulting in the substantial backlog of unclaimed funds currently in the system.
The figures underscore the importance of enhanced public education campaigns and streamlined processes for owners to verify their claims. Efforts to improve accessibility to information about unclaimed money and simplify claim procedures could help reduce the growing stockpile of funds awaiting collection.
The government has indicated that addressing the unclaimed money issue remains a priority, with plans to boost awareness and facilitate faster resolution of legitimate claims through various financial institutions and regulatory bodies.
