Malaysia reverts to haze policy: schools close at API 200

Schools in Malaysia will close when the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 200, according to the Education Ministry's reaffirmation of its existing haze policy. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek clarified that the ministry is adhering to established protocols rather than implementing new measures to address air quality concerns affecting students.

Under the current framework, schools automatically shut their doors at the API threshold of 200, which indicates unhealthy air conditions. The decision aligns with public health guidelines designed to protect students from prolonged exposure to hazardous air quality.

Beyond the official closure threshold, Sidek indicated that parents retain discretionary authority over their children's safety. Guardians who have concerns about air quality and its potential health impacts may keep their children at home, provided they formally notify the school of their decision.

The ministry's stance balances standardized public health measures with parental agency, allowing schools to operate normally during moderate pollution episodes while enabling individual families to make protective decisions based on their specific circumstances. The approach maintains consistency with Malaysia's established haze management protocols for the education sector.
