KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — Air quality across Malaysia deteriorated significantly on Thursday, with 15 locations nationwide recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, according to official monitoring data.

Pasir Gudang in Johor state emerged as the most severely affected area, registering an API reading of 180. This classification places the industrial town in the unhealthy category, which typically poses health risks to the general population with prolonged exposure.

The widespread degradation in air quality has raised concerns among environmental and health officials. Residents in affected areas, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, have been advised to reduce outdoor activities and consider using air filtration masks when venturing outside.

The Department of Environment and local authorities have intensified air quality monitoring across the country. Meteorological forecasts indicate that prevailing wind patterns and industrial activities in various regions have contributed to the current air pollution levels.

Malaysians are urged to check real-time API updates through official channels and follow health advisories issued by the Ministry of Health to minimise exposure to hazardous air conditions.
