Malaysia's air quality shows marginal gains as Sarawak towns struggle

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — Malaysia's overall air quality demonstrated slight improvements on Thursday, though the gains masked worsening conditions in parts of Sarawak, where haze continued to pose health concerns for residents.

Kapit recorded particularly poor air quality throughout the day, with pollution levels escalating as hours progressed and eventually surpassing readings from other affected areas across the country. The town's air quality index climbed steadily, reflecting the accumulation of atmospheric particulates that have blanketed the region.

Serian also remained severely impacted by haze conditions, maintaining hazardous pollution levels that prompted health advisories for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

The marginal national improvement came as meteorological conditions shifted slightly in other regions, though experts cautioned that the situation remained precarious. Authorities continued monitoring air quality readings in real-time and advised residents in affected areas to limit outdoor activities and use protective masks when venturing outside.
