Malaysia's Barisan Nasional courted by rival coalitions ahead of state elections
Both Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional have signalled openness to cooperating with Barisan Nasional, according to the ruling coalition's Melaka chapter, as the state prepares for upcoming polls.

Barisan Nasional (BN) finds itself in an enviable position ahead of state elections, with overtures from two rival political coalitions vying for its support. The Melaka BN chairman described the coalition as being courted like a 'maiden' by both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), indicating significant interest from both sides in potential electoral cooperation.
Leaders from both opposition coalitions have separately suggested they remain open to working with BN in the upcoming state contests. This demonstrates the continued relevance of the once-dominant BN, which seeks to rebuild its political standing following losses in recent national elections.
The willingness of multiple coalitions to engage BN reflects the fragmented nature of Malaysian politics, where no single bloc commands overwhelming support in several states. Coalition-building and seat allocations have become increasingly important strategies as parties manoeuvre for electoral advantage.
For BN, the competing interest from PH and PN presents both opportunities and challenges, as party leaders must weigh which partnership would best serve their political interests while maintaining internal cohesion. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly influence the composition of state governments across Malaysia.
