Malaysia's Clean-Up Day Smashes Participation and Recycling Records

The annual environmental initiative achieved the milestones in recognition ceremonies held in Kuala Lumpur on September 27, with both achievements formally registered in the Malaysia Book of Records.

The mass participation figure of 272,390 volunteers represents a significant increase from previous editions of the programme, reflecting growing public awareness of environmental conservation and community engagement in cleanliness drives. The collection of 89 tonnes of recyclable materials underscores the scale of waste management efforts mobilised during the event.

Hari Cuci Malaysia, which translates to Malaysia Clean Day, is an annual nationwide campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and encouraging Malaysians to take active roles in maintaining cleanliness in their communities. The programme typically focuses on cleaning public spaces, beaches, waterways and other areas while simultaneously raising awareness about proper waste segregation and recycling practices.

The record-breaking performance demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated community action in addressing environmental challenges. Organisers attributed the success to heightened participation from government agencies, private sector partners, non-governmental organisations and individual volunteers across multiple states.

The 2026 edition marks a continued upward trajectory for the initiative, which has become an established fixture in Malaysia's environmental calendar, contributing to national sustainability objectives while fostering social cohesion and civic responsibility among participants.
