Malaysia's data centre power demand set to surge to 8.39GW by 2030

Malaysia's data centre industry is bracing for substantial growth in energy consumption, with projections indicating total power demand will reach 8.39 gigawatts by 2030, reflecting the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure across the region.

Johor is expected to lead this surge, accounting for 4.42GW of the projected demand—more than half of the national total. The southern state's strategic location, competitive pricing, and existing tech ecosystem have positioned it as the country's premier data centre destination, attracting significant investment from regional and international operators.

This escalating power requirement underscores the critical need for Malaysia's energy sector to expand capacity and modernise its grid infrastructure. The surge in data centre electricity demand coincides with the nation's broader digital transformation agenda and growing reliance on cloud services, artificial intelligence, and data processing capabilities across industries.

Industry stakeholders are increasingly focused on balancing this growth with sustainability concerns. Many operators are exploring renewable energy solutions and energy-efficient technologies to meet the projected demands while addressing environmental commitments and rising operational costs associated with conventional power generation.
