Malaysia's rapidly expanding data centre sector is projected to consume a maximum of 8,391 megawatts of electricity by 2030, reflecting the region's growing role as a digital hub in Southeast Asia.
Johor is anticipated to record the highest demand among Malaysian states, with peak electricity consumption reaching 4,428MW for data centre operations. Selangor, home to numerous technology facilities, is expected to demand 1,481MW during the same period.
The substantial power requirements underscore the strategic importance of data centre development to Malaysia's digital economy and the critical need for adequate electricity infrastructure. The projections highlight the interconnected challenges of sustaining rapid technological growth while managing energy resources effectively.
These forecasts come as Malaysia positions itself as a competitive destination for regional data centre investment, competing with other Southeast Asian nations for technology infrastructure development and hosting services for multinational corporations operating across Asia-Pacific.
