Malaysia's merchandise trade reached unprecedented levels during the opening nine months of the year, signalling strong demand for the country's products in key regional markets. According to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), total trade volume jumped 30.1 percent year-on-year to 2.91 trillion ringgit, equivalent to approximately 713 billion US dollars.
Export momentum remained the primary engine of growth, while import activity also accelerated substantially. Inbound shipments climbed 25.7 percent to 1.34 trillion ringgit, or roughly 328 billion US dollars, reflecting increased consumption and industrial activity within the nation.
The expansion in trade volumes generated a widening trade surplus of 232.38 billion ringgit during the nine-month window. The result underscores Malaysia's competitive positioning in global supply chains, particularly across electronics, petroleum products, and palm oil sectors that dominate the country's export basket.
The robust performance reflects resilient demand from trading partners across Asia-Pacific and beyond, even as global economic conditions remain uneven. Regional trade dynamics and supply chain developments continue to shape Malaysia's commercial trajectory as the year progresses.
