Malaysia's One China Policy Rooted in Abdul Razak Era, Anwar Says

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that Malaysia's One China policy is not a recent development but rather an established position inherited from the country's earlier leadership under Abdul Razak Hussein.

The clarification comes after Anwar faced criticism over comments made during a recent interview regarding Taiwan. Despite the backlash, the prime minister emphasised that Malaysia's diplomatic approach to the issue has remained consistent over the years.

"This is not a new policy," Anwar stated, underscoring that the government's position on Taiwan reflects longstanding principles that have guided Malaysian foreign relations since the Abdul Razak era.

The prime minister's remarks seek to reassure both domestic stakeholders and international observers that Malaysia's Taiwan policy maintains continuity with historical precedent, regardless of recent controversy surrounding his public statements on the matter.

Malaysia recognises the People's Republic of China and does not maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, a position that has been central to the country's foreign policy framework for decades.
