Malaysia's PISA 2025 results show gains in science and reading, maths decline

Malaysia's performance in the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) revealed a mixed picture, with advances in two core subjects offset by a decline in mathematics proficiency among secondary school students.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek disclosed that the science domain achieved 419 points, while reading literacy reached 393 points, both representing improvements in student competency. However, mathematics performance declined to 397 points, signalling challenges in numeracy skills among the assessed cohort.
The PISA assessment, administered by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), serves as a benchmark for evaluating educational systems across participating nations. Malaysia's results underscore ongoing efforts to strengthen foundational learning in core subjects, particularly at the secondary level.
