KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) has deployed to Nepal to support rescue and relief efforts in the affected regions. The 62-member contingent, comprising rescue specialists, medical personnel, and logistics support staff, touched down in Kathmandu with essential equipment and supplies.
Upon arrival, the team immediately commenced drone reconnaissance missions to map affected areas and identify locations requiring urgent assistance. The aerial surveys will provide critical data to coordinate search and rescue operations and assess the scale of infrastructure damage across multiple districts.
SMART, which operates under the Ministry of Defence, is one of Malaysia's premier disaster response units. The deployment marks the nation's commitment to regional humanitarian cooperation and comes as part of established mutual assistance protocols between Malaysia and Nepal.
The Malaysian contingent is coordinating with local Nepali authorities, international relief organizations, and other foreign rescue teams operating in the region. Malaysian medical teams are also establishing field clinics to provide emergency healthcare services to displaced persons and injured survivors.
Details regarding the team's operational timeline and specific deployment zones are being coordinated with Nepali disaster management authorities. The Malaysian government has also pledged additional resources if required as the humanitarian situation develops.
