PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia's National Unity Ministry plans to evaluate the effectiveness of laws protecting the 3Rs—race, religion and royalty—as well as existing hate speech legislation, officials said on Monday.
The Unity Issues Management Committee (JPIP), operating under the ministry's purview, will undertake the study to assess how well current legal frameworks address concerns related to national unity and social harmony. The review is expected to examine enforcement gaps and the adequacy of penalties under existing statutes.
The assessment comes amid ongoing discussions about maintaining public order and preventing divisive speech that could undermine Malaysia's multicultural society. Officials indicated the ministry would consider recommendations for potential legislative improvements or enhanced enforcement mechanisms based on findings from the review.
The committee's examination will likely include input from relevant government agencies, legal experts and stakeholders involved in implementing and enforcing these laws across the country. Results from the study are expected to inform policy decisions on strengthening protections for national cohesion.
