Malaysia's welfare department seeks higher allowance for patient caregivers
Social welfare officials have petitioned the government to increase monthly financial support for caregivers looking after bedridden patients. The department is seeking to raise the current RM500 monthly allowance to better assist those providing critical home-based care.

The Social Welfare Department has formally requested that the government boost its monthly caregiver allowance, citing the financial strain on individuals caring for bedridden and immobilised patients at home. Director-General Che Murad Sayang Ramjan confirmed the department has submitted its request to increase the existing RM500 monthly payment.
The allowance programme provides financial support to caregivers who dedicate substantial time and effort to caring for dependents unable to perform daily activities independently. Officials argue that the current payment level no longer adequately reflects the costs and responsibilities associated with full-time patient care.
Home-based caregiving represents a significant economic and social contribution, often requiring caregivers to forgo employment opportunities or reduce working hours to provide necessary support. The welfare department's push for higher allowances aims to recognise this commitment while easing the financial burden on families managing complex care needs.
The proposal remains under government consideration, with officials emphasising the importance of adequate support systems for Malaysia's growing caregiver population.
