Malaysia scales back job creation targets for economic corridors in 2027

The government has cut its job creation target for economic corridors by 71 percent for 2027, with new positions expected to fall sharply from 150,100 in 2026 to 43,000 next year. Despite the substantial reduction in projected employment gains, the government anticipates that realised investments in these corridors will rise from RM91 billion to RM94 billion during the same period. The shift suggests a focus on capital-intensive projects that generate higher investment returns relative to direct job creation. Economic corridor initiatives across South and Southeast Asia have become increasingly important for regional development, typically targeting infrastructure, manufacturing, and service sectors. The adjustment indicates the government may be prioritising investment quality and infrastructure development over immediate employment expansion in these strategic zones.
