Malaysia seeks Nepal approval to deploy SMART rescue team for flood relief

The Malaysian government has approached Nepalese authorities seeking clearance to send the SMART team to help with disaster relief efforts, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The deployment would focus on search and rescue operations in flood-affected areas of Nepal, which has been grappling with the aftermath of severe monsoon flooding that has impacted numerous communities across the country.

SMART is Malaysia's elite disaster response unit, comprising trained personnel equipped and experienced in handling complex search and rescue missions in challenging environments. The team has been mobilized for international disaster relief operations on several previous occasions, bringing specialized skills and equipment to assist affected nations.

The request represents Malaysia's commitment to regional humanitarian cooperation and mutual assistance during natural disasters. Nepal's response to the deployment request is still pending, with Malaysian authorities awaiting formal approval from Kathmandu to proceed with sending the team and conducting joint rescue operations.

Depending on Nepal's confirmation, the SMART team would coordinate closely with local Nepalese rescue authorities and international partners already engaged in relief efforts to maximize the effectiveness of search and rescue operations in the flood-hit regions.
