The economy ministry has identified semiconductor design and manufacturing as a key growth area, recognising the sector's importance to the nation's economic future and technological sovereignty.
The initiative will build on Malaysia's existing strengths in semiconductor manufacturing and assembly, sectors in which the country has established itself as a regional leader. By moving upstream into chip design, Malaysia aims to capture greater value within the semiconductor supply chain and reduce dependence on foreign intellectual property.
International technology partnerships, including collaboration with established semiconductor design firms, are expected to form the backbone of the strategy. These partnerships would provide access to advanced design methodologies, manufacturing processes, and market expertise needed to bring competitive Malaysian-designed chips to market.
