Malaysia's Sports Ministry has indicated it will not approve the Hyrox KL event scheduled for next month unless organisers remove alcohol-related sponsorships from the competition.
Minister Taufiq Johari said the application for the international obstacle course racing event is still being processed, with a decision pending the outcome of sponsorship discussions. No government funds have been disbursed to date, he added.
Hyrox is a global fitness event that combines a 8-kilometre run with 50 workout stations. The Kuala Lumpur edition represents a significant addition to Malaysia's sports calendar, attracting participants from across the region.
The sponsorship issue reflects Malaysia's regulatory environment regarding alcohol promotion and marketing at public events. While the ministry has not explicitly banned the event, the conditional approval stance signals that organisers will need to restructure their commercial arrangements to proceed.
Event organisers have not yet publicly responded to the ministry's position. The matter underscores ongoing negotiations between international sporting bodies and Malaysian authorities over compliance with local regulations governing commercial activities at major competitions.
