Malaysia stands ready to help Indonesia battle forest fires

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 — Malaysia remains prepared to provide comprehensive support to Indonesia as it tackles recurring forest and land fire incidents, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today.

The commitment underscores the close bilateral relationship between the two nations and reflects shared concerns over transboundary haze, a phenomenon that regularly impacts air quality throughout the region during fire season.

Indonesia has faced significant challenges from forest fires in recent years, particularly in Sumatra and Kalimantan, where peatland fires contribute substantially to regional air pollution. Such incidents have prompted coordinated responses involving multiple Southeast Asian countries.

Malaysia has previously deployed personnel and resources to assist Indonesian authorities during peak fire seasons, including ground support teams and aerial reconnaissance capabilities. The mutual assistance framework between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta reflects broader regional cooperation mechanisms designed to mitigate environmental and public health impacts.

The offer of continued support comes as weather patterns and land management practices continue to influence fire occurrence across the Indonesian archipelago during the dry season months.
