KUALA LUMPUR — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Criminal Investigation Department has welcomed government measures to enhance enforcement action against overseas scammers exploiting Malaysian victims, signalling a tougher stance on transnational fraud.
The enhanced legal framework allows authorities to pursue scam operatives based abroad who target residents, addressing a persistent challenge in combating sophisticated international fraud networks. Police officials indicated the new powers provide better mechanisms for coordinating with foreign law enforcement agencies and pursuing cases with cross-border dimensions.
The move comes amid growing public concern over fraud schemes, including romance scams, investment fraud, and impersonation rackets that increasingly originate from overseas call centres and criminal syndicates. Malaysian authorities have previously identified several countries as hubs for organised scam operations targeting victims locally.
Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant against unsolicited financial requests and to report suspected fraud to police. The PDRM emphasised that cooperation between domestic and international law enforcement bodies remains essential to dismantling organised scam networks and protecting Malaysian citizens from financial exploitation.
