Malaysia is charting an ambitious growth trajectory for its medical device sector, with the nation aiming to achieve RM50 billion in exports by 2030, according to Vice Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The target represents a significant jump from the current export value of RM34 billion, reflecting the government's commitment to strengthening the country's position in the global medical device market.

The expansion initiative comes as Southeast Asia experiences increased demand for medical devices, driven by ageing populations, rising healthcare spending, and growing adoption of advanced medical technologies. Malaysia, already an established player in the sector, is well-positioned to capture a larger share of regional and international markets through expanded manufacturing capabilities and innovation.

Achieving the RM50 billion export target will require coordinated efforts across multiple fronts, including investment in manufacturing infrastructure, workforce development, and research and innovation capabilities. The government is expected to provide support mechanisms and incentives to encourage private sector participation in scaling up production and export operations.

The medical device sector is recognised as a high-value manufacturing segment with significant potential for employment generation and economic contribution. Successfully reaching the 2030 target would strengthen Malaysia's credentials as a healthcare manufacturing hub in Asia and enhance the sector's contribution to the nation's overall export earnings and economic growth.
