Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi outlined the government's strategy to position Malaysia as a regional leader in medical device manufacturing and exports. The RM50 billion target by 2030 reflects confidence in the country's capabilities within the growing medical technology sector across South and Southeast Asia.
Current export figures of RM34.54 billion demonstrate Malaysia's established presence in the medtech supply chain. The proposed expansion would require accelerated investment in manufacturing capacity, research and development, and skilled workforce development across the sector.
The initiative signals a shift beyond Malaysia's traditional role as a manufacturing hub toward building a more comprehensive medical technology ecosystem. Officials have indicated that achieving the target will depend on supporting both multinational corporations operating in the country and homegrown medtech companies.
The push aligns with broader regional healthcare demand growth and increasing adoption of advanced medical devices across Southeast Asia. Malaysia's strategic location, existing industrial infrastructure, and skilled labor force provide a foundation for expanding the sector's contribution to national exports and economic growth.
