Malaysia, Thailand to probe subsidised fertiliser smuggling allegations

Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to utilise existing bilateral mechanisms to investigate allegations that subsidised padi fertiliser intended for local farmers has been smuggled into Thailand for use in bomb-making operations. The claim, which surfaced in Pasir Puteh, has prompted both nations to intensify scrutiny of agricultural product trafficking along their shared border. Authorities in both countries have expressed concern over the potential diversion of government subsidies meant to support rice farming communities. The investigation will focus on supply chain vulnerabilities and enforcement gaps that may have enabled such smuggling operations. Officials from both nations are expected to coordinate through established cross-border cooperation channels to trace the origins, routes, and end-users of the diverted fertiliser, while also examining whether other subsidised agricultural inputs have been similarly exploited.
