Malaysia to begin Myanmar refugee repatriation programme in late September
Malaysia has completed arrangements for the first phase of a voluntary repatriation scheme that will see approximately 1,500 Myanmar refugees return to their homeland starting Sept. 29.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has finalised preparations for the initial stage of a voluntary repatriation programme targeting Myanmar refugees, with operations set to commence on Sept. 29, authorities announced Thursday.
The first phase of the scheme will facilitate the return of around 1,500 refugees to Myanmar, marking a significant step in addressing the displacement crisis that has seen hundreds of thousands flee the country since the 2021 military coup.
The repatriation initiative represents a coordinated effort between Malaysian authorities and international partners to enable refugees who wish to return home to do so in an organised manner. The programme emphasises voluntary participation, with refugees able to choose whether to participate in the scheme.
Malaysia has hosted a substantial refugee population from Myanmar, placing considerable strain on its resources and infrastructure. The repatriation programme is expected to ease pressure on local services while providing Myanmar nationals with an opportunity to rebuild their lives in their country of origin.
Further phases of the repatriation scheme are anticipated to follow, pending the outcomes of the initial programme and continued coordination with relevant international agencies and the Myanmar authorities.
