Malaysia to impose stricter e-commerce rules on electrical, halal goods

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysian authorities will move swiftly to strengthen regulatory controls over e-commerce platforms, particularly regarding electrical products and halal-certified goods, according to a senior government official.
The initiative aims to enhance consumer protection and ensure that products sold online meet established safety and certification requirements. The focus on electrical items reflects concerns over substandard or counterfeit goods entering the marketplace, while halal oversight addresses religious and cultural compliance standards important to Muslim consumers.
Government officials emphasized that the regulatory tightening will not result in platform shutdowns or operations ceasing entirely. Instead, the approach centres on implementing compliance frameworks and strengthened monitoring mechanisms that e-commerce operators must adhere to when listing products in these categories.
The move comes as online shopping continues to expand significantly across Malaysia, with authorities seeking to balance consumer protection against market accessibility. Platform operators are expected to cooperate with relevant regulatory bodies to ensure adherence to the new standards.
