Malaysia intends to use its forthcoming Asean chairmanship to catalyse more robust coordinated responses to the recurring transboundary haze problem that periodically blankets South and Southeast Asia, a senior government official said on Tuesday.

The country will prioritise haze mitigation efforts during its tenure chairing the regional bloc and while hosting the 28th Sub-Regional Ministerial meeting, positioning environmental cooperation as a critical agenda item for the coming year.

The transboundary haze phenomenon, largely attributed to land clearing and agricultural burning across the region, has posed persistent challenges to air quality and public health in affected nations. Malaysia has historically been among the hardest hit by seasonal haze episodes originating from neighbouring territories.

By elevating the issue through Asean platforms, Malaysia seeks to establish stronger frameworks for monitoring, prevention and response mechanisms among member states. The push reflects growing regional recognition that addressing transboundary pollution requires coordinated diplomatic and operational commitments.

The announcement underscores Malaysia's commitment to wielding its leadership role within Asean to advance environmental sustainability and protect regional air quality standards during the coming year.
