KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia's government will introduce MediAsas, a voluntary medical insurance and takaful scheme, beginning in 2027 as part of efforts to expand healthcare coverage among the population.

The new scheme will allow Malaysians to purchase voluntary medical protection through both conventional insurance and Islamic takaful products. A key feature of MediAsas is that eligible participants can utilise funds from their EPF Akaun Sejahtera account to pay insurance premiums, providing a practical funding mechanism for those with retirement savings.

The nationwide rollout of MediAsas represents an extension of Malaysia's social safety net, complementing existing mandatory coverage schemes. By allowing Akaun Sejahtera withdrawals for premium payments, the government aims to encourage broader participation in voluntary health insurance while enabling workers to access their retirement funds for healthcare protection.

Official details regarding premium structures, coverage limits, and enrollment procedures are expected to be announced as the launch date approaches. The scheme forms part of the government's broader healthcare financing initiatives designed to reduce out-of-pocket expenses and protect citizens against major medical costs.
