KUALA LUMPUR — Nearly 9,500 buildings across Malaysia will be required to appoint dedicated fire safety managers from April 1, 2027, the Fire and Rescue Department announced. The directive applies to premises classified as high-risk under the Fire Services Act, including commercial, industrial and institutional facilities where fire risks or potential loss of life are considered substantial. According to the department, the measure aims to strengthen compliance with fire safety regulations and establish clearer accountability for fire prevention and emergency response procedures. Building owners are advised to begin identifying and recruiting qualified fire safety managers well in advance of the deadline. Fire safety managers will be tasked with implementing and monitoring fire safety protocols, maintaining emergency equipment, conducting regular safety inspections, and coordinating evacuation drills. Non-compliance with the requirement will be subject to penalties under the Fire Services Act, underscoring the regulatory importance of the initiative.
