Malaysia to overhaul e-commerce platform registration and regulatory framework

Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that authorities will undertake a comprehensive examination of how digital commerce platforms operate in Malaysia, following a wave of consumer complaints regarding items marketed through online channels.

Among the key issues triggering the review is public uncertainty surrounding the halal status of products being distributed through e-commerce platforms, Fadzil indicated. The announcement reflects growing concerns from consumers and regulators about the adequacy of current oversight mechanisms in the rapidly expanding online retail sector.

The regulatory review is expected to establish clearer standards for platform operators and enhance verification procedures for merchants and their merchandise. Officials have not yet announced a timeline for completing the assessment, but indicated that stakeholder consultations would form part of the process.

The move comes as Malaysia's e-commerce sector continues to expand significantly, with increasing numbers of consumers purchasing goods online. The government has emphasized that strengthening regulatory frameworks is essential to maintaining consumer confidence and ensuring compliance with local standards, particularly regarding halal certification requirements that are critical to the Malaysian market.
