Malaysia to push for new internet coverage metrics at ITU forum

Malaysia intends to advocate for a revised approach to measuring internet coverage that places greater emphasis on connectivity in key economic zones, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

The proposal comes as Malaysia seeks to ensure that international benchmarking of internet access better reflects the needs of developing economies and their growth corridors. Current measurement methodologies, according to Malaysian officials, may not adequately capture coverage in areas critical to economic development.

Fahmi indicated that Malaysia will formally present this proposal to the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations agency responsible for setting global telecommunications standards. The initiative aims to encourage a more nuanced approach to assessing digital infrastructure that takes into account the concentration of business activity and employment centers.

The push reflects Malaysia's broader efforts to improve digital connectivity as part of its economic development agenda. By highlighting the importance of coverage in high-value economic zones, Malaysia hopes to shape international dialogue around telecommunications infrastructure investment and progress measurement.

The proposal is expected to resonate with other developing nations facing similar challenges in balancing universal access with targeted investment in areas that drive economic growth.
