Malaysia urges UN to challenge Security Council veto system

Malaysia has renewed calls for the United Nations to confront the veto power of the Security Council's permanent members, arguing that the system undermines the organisation's effectiveness in addressing global crises. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Malaysian representatives contended that the veto mechanism has become an obstruction to international peace and security efforts. The veto power, held by the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom, allows any one permanent member to block resolutions on matters ranging from humanitarian interventions to peacekeeping operations. Malaysia's position reflects broader discontent among non-permanent members and developing nations, which argue that the Cold War-era structure no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities or serves the interests of the global community. The call for reform of the Security Council has gained momentum in recent years, particularly following instances where vetoes have prevented action on major humanitarian and security crises.
