Malaysia warns against unapproved weight-loss drug Reta

The Ministry of Health (KKM) has issued a warning to Malaysian consumers regarding the use of Reta-based weight-loss products, emphasising that such medications remain unapproved in the country. According to the ministry, no pharmaceutical products containing Reta have obtained registration with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA), the government body responsible for drug approval and safety.

The alert comes amid growing concern over the use of unregulated slimming agents, commonly referred to as 'weight-loss pens' in colloquial usage. The ministry's stance reflects strict adherence to Malaysia's pharmaceutical regulatory framework, which requires all medicines to undergo rigorous safety and efficacy assessments before market approval.

Consumers are urged to obtain weight management medications only through legitimate medical channels and registered healthcare providers. The KKM emphasised that self-medication with unregistered products poses significant health risks, including potential adverse effects and drug interactions. Individuals seeking weight-loss treatment are advised to consult licensed medical professionals who can recommend approved therapeutic options appropriate to their medical needs.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to protecting public health by maintaining stringent standards for pharmaceutical products available in the Malaysian market. Those with information regarding the illegal distribution of unregistered medicines are encouraged to report such activities to the relevant authorities.
