Malaysia, WHO to finalise pandemic pact by May 2027

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia and the World Health Organization (WHO) have renewed their joint commitment to finalising a pandemic agreement by May 2027, according to Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad. The targeted completion date reflects the urgency with which both entities view the need for stronger international frameworks to address future health emergencies. The agreement is intended to enhance global coordination and response mechanisms in the event of pandemics, building on lessons learned from the COVID-19 outbreak. Dzulkefly's announcement underscores Malaysia's active role in international health diplomacy and its support for multilateral efforts to strengthen pandemic preparedness across the region and globally. The WHO has been working with member states to develop binding agreements that would improve disease surveillance, equitable vaccine distribution, and coordinated response protocols. Malaysia's participation signals the country's commitment to playing a constructive role in shaping international health security standards. Officials from both Malaysia and the WHO are expected to continue holding regular consultations to track progress on the negotiations through to the May 2027 deadline.
