Malaysian drivers warned on Thailand insurance, navigation apps
Malaysian motorists planning to drive into Thailand are being urged to secure comprehensive third-party insurance and reconsider their choice of navigation applications, according to diplomatic guidance issued in Songkhla.

Malaysians taking their personal vehicles across the border into Thailand should prioritise obtaining adequate insurance coverage beyond minimum requirements, officials have advised, highlighting potential financial and legal complications for those involved in accidents or traffic incidents.
The guidance emerged from discussions in Songkhla, with diplomatic representatives emphasising that third-party insurance remains essential protection for drivers operating vehicles in foreign jurisdictions. Standard coverage obtained in Malaysia may not provide sufficient protection under Thai traffic laws, which carry strict liability provisions.
Consular officials also cautioned Malaysian drivers against sole reliance on certain navigation applications when travelling in Thailand. While smartphone-based navigation tools offer convenience, drivers are encouraged to maintain alternative routing options and familiarity with main highways to avoid becoming overly dependent on single digital sources that may prove unreliable in remote areas or during network disruptions.
The recommendations reflect broader safety and compliance concerns for regional motorists, particularly as cross-border road travel continues among Malaysian nationals. Officials stressed that advance preparation, including insurance verification and route planning, significantly reduces risks associated with international driving.
