Malaysian entrepreneur brings nasi kandar concept to Vietnam's Phu Quoc island

What began as a leisure trip to Phu Quoc has evolved into a business venture for Malaysian entrepreneur Nash Ramesh, who identified an opportunity to introduce nasi kandar—the beloved Malaysian rice-based dish—to the island's growing food scene.

Ramesh recognised that while Phu Quoc attracts numerous international visitors and expatriates seeking familiar cuisines, the Vietnamese island lacked access to authentic nasi kandar, a staple of Malaysian dining culture. The dish, traditionally served with rice accompanied by various curries and side dishes, has become emblematic of Malaysian culinary identity.

The entrepreneur's venture represents a broader trend of Malaysian food businesses expanding into Southeast Asian markets, capitalising on both tourism and the region's interconnected culinary interests. Phu Quoc, known primarily for its seafood and tourist attractions, now offers another dining option reflecting the multicultural flavours increasingly available across the region.
