Malaysian firms face steep bills from recent haze episode

KUALA LUMPUR — The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) has highlighted the financial burden imposed on local businesses by the recent haze episode, with companies collectively spending approximately RM280,000 on haze-related expenses.

The costs, which primarily comprise purchases of protective respiratory masks and medical expenses for affected workers, represent an unplanned drain on corporate resources during the air quality crisis. The report underscores the broader economic impact of transboundary pollution on Malaysia's business community beyond direct operational disruptions.

The haze, which affected air quality across the region, prompted businesses to invest in health and safety measures to protect their workforce. Many firms purchased masks in bulk and covered medical consultations and treatments related to respiratory issues triggered or exacerbated by poor air quality.

The FMM's findings add to growing concerns about the recurring nature of haze events and their cumulative economic consequences for Malaysian enterprises. The manufacturers' federation has long advocated for stronger regional cooperation and preventive measures to mitigate the impact of future episodes.

Business associations have called on authorities to intensify efforts in addressing the root causes of transboundary haze, noting that the costs borne by companies ultimately affect competitiveness and operational efficiency across multiple sectors.
