Malaysian haze deteriorates as 40 areas record unhealthy air quality

Air quality across Malaysia has deteriorated markedly, with health authorities reporting that 40 areas are now registering unhealthy pollution levels. The situation is particularly acute in Selangor, where Johan Setia has recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 189, indicating unhealthy conditions that may affect vulnerable populations.

The southern state of Johor has been especially hard hit, with seven locations within the state recording unhealthy air quality. The widespread haze affecting multiple regions suggests transboundary pollution may be contributing to the poor air conditions across the country.

An API reading between 101 and 200 is classified as unhealthy, meaning members of sensitive groups such as children, elderly persons, and those with respiratory conditions may experience health effects. Residents in affected areas have been advised to limit outdoor activities and consider wearing protective masks.

The deteriorating haze conditions come as Malaysia's dry season typically brings heightened air pollution risks across the region. Authorities are continuing to monitor air quality levels and issue regular updates to the public.
